The guides on Auto Electrical Australia are written to help you understand vehicle electrical problems, decide whether a job is safe to do yourself, and know when to call an auto electrician. They are general information only.
Before you start any job
- Check your vehicle’s manual. Vehicles differ, and the maker’s instructions come first.
- Work safely. Wear eye protection, remove rings and watches, and keep tools away from battery terminals. When disconnecting a battery, take the negative terminal off first and put it back on last.
- Fuse every new circuit. An unfused cable can start a fire.
- Know your limits. If a step doesn’t match what you see on your vehicle, or you’re not confident, stop and get professional help.
Jobs that must be done by professionals
- High-voltage hybrid and electric vehicle systems (orange cables and components).
- Airbag (SRS) systems.
- Air conditioning refrigerant handling, which needs an ARC licence.
- Fixed 240V wiring in caravans and vehicles, which needs a licensed electrician.
Road rules
Lighting, towing and electrical modifications must meet the Australian Design Rules and your state’s road rules. Our guides link to official sources, but rules change. Check with your state road authority before modifying your vehicle.
